Introducing BARDEE Organic Fertiliser
The sun is shining and the fruit trees are in full bloom, creating perfect conditions for trying something new. This month we introduced an exciting organic fertiliser from BARDEE, made from soldier fly larvae. It is not only packed with nutrients, but also claims to offset five kilograms of CO₂ for every one kilogram used.
We are currently trialling it at 250 kilograms per hectare across a few paddocks. One paddock was harrowed and direct-drilled with a ryegrass and fertiliser mix. The others have had the fertiliser broadcast over selected areas. We will be monitoring the results closely and look forward to sharing an update over the coming months.
Pasture Update
The PASJA II leafy turnip has emerged and is starting to thrive now that temperatures have lifted. We had a strong germination and it will be interesting to see how well the seedlings compete with the existing pasture that is also getting going.
The Gippy Dryland mix is now motoring along. Despite being sown a little later than ideal and facing some freezing winter temperatures, it held on very well. This early-maturing mix has helped suppress some of the less desirable grasses like bent grass and sorrel as we transition into spring. So far, we are very pleased with its performance.
Willarah Dairy
In early September we welcomed Bluebell, a Jersey x Speckle Park calf, to Willarah Farm. Our house cow Rona did a great job and has returned to milking life beautifully. We now have more than enough fresh milk, butter and cheese to keep the kitchen well stocked.
Beef Update
The steers had a drench last week and will be in for weighing and vaccinations in the coming month. With the sunshine returning, they are starting to put on good weight. We will only process them when they are in prime condition, so keep an eye out for an announcement.
We are hoping to offer pre-Christmas beef packs, so stay tuned.
